Description

Our planet is an amazing place, but it needs our help to thrive. That’s why each year on April 22nd, more than a billion people celebrate Earth Day to protect the planet. By taking part in activities like picking up trash and planting trees, we’re making our world a happier and healthier place to live in. It represents a day of action that changes human behavior and provokes policy changes across the world.

Earth Day was a unified response to an environment in crisis; on April 22nd, 1970, 20 million Americans took hundreds of cities to protest environmental ignorance and demand a new way forward for our planet. The first Earth Day is now recognized as the planet’s largest civic event. By 1990, Earth Day was an event celebrated by more than 140 countries around the world.

The theme for Earth Day 2020 is climate action. Climate change represents the biggest challenge to the future of humanity and the life-support systems that make our world habitable. That’s why, it was chosen as the topic for the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.

This year Earth Day will be different because of the pandemic. According to Newser, “As the coronavirus causes shutdowns across the world, a coalition of youth-led organizations that had planned large marches for the 50th anniversary of Earth Day next month, are now planning a three-day livestream event instead.” The event will encourage engagement and action among people who are quarantined at home and who may have planned to march in many parts of the world. Katie Eder, the executive director of the Future Coalition, said “We are really looking at this as a way to reimagine what a social movement can look like in a digital age.”

But Earth Day is not just about appreciating the environment, it’s about preserving it. Every day should be Earth Day; a great way to look at this day is not just to picture it as a one-time event, but to take it as a way of life. It is the small daily habits that make a difference and lead to big positive changes on our planet. It’s quite simple to give back, for example, you can reduce the use of unnecessary lighting around your house, reduce your water consumption, stop buying single-use plastic products and recycle items properly. It’s time for us to start, but this time never stop taking eco-friendly actions in our lives.

The world needs us! There’s so much we can do to protect and restore our planet, from using a steel to-go-cup for coffee, to traveling in a sustainable way. It’s our time to take the initiative and contribute, it’s our responsibility to protect our planet for future generations. Earth is what we all have in common, let’s take care of our home.
