Tourism is a huge industry and it has been an important contributor to the growth of many countries. A country can gain so much from its tourism sector, making it vital to the wellbeing and progress of any nation. This sector, when thriving, brings in an abundance of wealth, growth, exposure, and employment opportunities.

Sustainable tourism and employment

Tourism is a driver of job growth and economic prosperity. According to the World Tourism Organisation, 1 in 10 people in the world are directly or indirectly employed by tourism. If all these people were taught about how to apply sustainability measures in their daily tasks, climate change would radically decrease.

Sustainable tourism development requires the informed participation of all the people who are part of it. Achieving it is a continuous process and it requires constant monitoring of impacts, and introducing the necessary preventive and corrective measures whenever is necessary.

Impact of tourism in the world

Tourism puts enormous stress on local land use and can lead to soil erosion, increased pollution, natural habitat loss, and more pressure on endangered species. These effects can gradually destroy the environmental resources on which tourism itself depends.

According to The World Counts, there are 1 billion tourist visitors in the world every year. That’s 30 every single second. Tourism often puts pressure on natural resources through over-consumption, and often in places where resources are already scarce. For example, an average golf course in a tropical country uses as much water as 60,000 rural villagers. It also uses 1500 kilograms of chemical fertilizers and pesticides per year.

Sustainable tourism is a rapidly growing industry, with potential benefits for both the environment and the economies of the tourist destinations. Education about it places a spotlight on responsible planning. As more tourists become aware of the lasting benefits of leaving clean footprints, they will become more conscious, respect nature, and minimize the impact on any habitat they visit.

What has the world taught us after the pandemic?

These hard times have made people become more aware of their habits and the world around them. Our planet has begun to heal and climate change has decreased thanks to the absence of human beings. Consciousness has played an important role in human lives these past three months. It’s important not to forget but to learn about the damage we have caused to our home planet and value the second chance we have to take care of it.

When the time to travel comes again, don’t be afraid to have new experiences and reconnect with your loved ones. But this time do it in a conscious and sustainable way. The world is giving us a second opportunity to rediscover it. It’s time for change and for a new kind of travel.
