From its foundation, Cuixmala has had a strong commitment with environmental preservation. Which is why the hotel uses environmentally friendly, biodegradable cleaning products that are specifically chosen for being
90% of Cuixmala’s employees are hired from the local community, which makes the hotel the area’s largest employer. To further stimulate economic growth for the coast of Jalisco, the hotel supports education in alliance with “La Escuelita”. As well, in order to strengthen the connection of guests with sustainable travel, the hotel offers guests multiple tours around Cuixmala’s facilities.
Almost all the food consumed at Cuixmala is produced locally at the hotel’s organic farms or sourced from the sister property’s ranch at Hacienda de San Antonio. The food harvested at Cuixmala follows biodynamic practices, which in addition to being organic, recognizes the spirit of nature, with crops sewn in accordance with celestial cycles.
To reduce energy usage, Cuixmala focuses on making an extensive use of outdoor living space. The hotel also uses solar panels to reduce energy reliance.
Cuixmala’s efforts towards managing water usage focuses on its pools and grey water management. For the first, Cuixmala uses a non-chemical saltwater system for purification of the water in resort’s swimming pools. The main pool uses only sea water, which is constantly coming in from the sea (it is filtered and then returned). While for the second, the property uses a low-impact wastewater treatment system. Gray water is recycled for use in landscape irrigation, further conserving important freshwater resources.
In order to reduce the hotel’s plastic waste production, Cuixmala provides guests with on-property filtered water in recyclable glass bottles. Regarding food waste, the staff divides it in two types: edible food waste is recycled to the pigs at the Cuixmala organic farm and non-edible food waste is composted into fertilizer. Food from the farms is collected in reusable containers.
