Sustainability
Jicaro Island Lodge is built from timber reclaimed from trees blown down by hurricane Felix and from tropical hardwoods which have FSC / Rainforest Alliance wood certification. The hotel furthers its commitment with the environment by using organic and biodegradable soaps, cleaning detergents and spa products.
Jicaro Island Lodge supports its community by striving to buy, hire and subcontract locally. The hotel also invests in empowering the community of the surrounding area. This is done by allocating a percentage of the hotel’s profits to support initiatives which provide locals healthy lifestyle alternatives, and by educating the local community in sustainable practices. Finally, in collaboration with US-based 501c3 Earth Equilibrium, Jicaro has developed the Padre Nello School; this is a community-based outreach program focused on the support and implementation of educational projects that encourage sustainable community development.

In addition, to strengthen the connection of guests with sustainable travel, the hotel offers tours to explore the surroundings and discover how sustainable practices are intertwined in their luxury vacations.
Almost all the food consumed at Jicaro is produced locally. As part of the hotel’s commitment to fostering a sustainable community, the herbs and plants grown in the orchard are divided in half. One half is assigned to the hotel and the other to the families that help grow the orchard. Jicaro also has its own local pig breeding program and chicken coop. Both initiatives provide alternative employment opportunities for local families.
To reduce energy usage, Jicaro Island Lodge employs solar panels as an energy source. The hotel also has energy efficient lighting and illumination. To avoid interfering with the surrounding wildlife, the electricity system has been installed underground. Among its efforts, Jicaro has its own biodigester which turns pig waste into a form of energy.
As part of Jicaro’s compromise to reduce water wastage, water is filtered. The hotel also employs a chlorine free system to clean the water in the pool and treats wastewater with a treatment plant complying not only with Nicaraguan but internationally accepted standards.
Jicaro has implemented into its DNA the four R’s: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Even though a strong recycling program is installed, the island’s location has pushed the hotel towards focusing on reducing and reusing waste production. As part of this initiative, all single use plastic has been banned from the island.
