Recognized with the “Earth Changers in the World Legacy Award” Senda Monteverde goes to great lengths to reduce its footprint. This accolade acknowledges cutting-edge leadership in environmentally friendly business practices and green technology; from renewable energy and water conservation to zero-waste systems and carbon-emissions reduction. Among its achievements, Senda has planted over 4,000 native plants and trees across its grounds.

To ensure guests that their holidays are not harmful to the environment, Senda uses fully biodegradable products. In addition, the hotel has partnered with Monteverde Forest Clean Up, a group of young locals dedicated to keeping Monteverde as nature intended. Aligned with this initiative, staff members volunteer their time to help clean up the natural areas of the town.
Senda believes that the only way to change the face of tourism is through community involvement. This is why the hotel’s staff is exclusively Costa Rican, with the majority of the team having been born and raised within walking distance of the hotel. As part of this practice, the staff’s salaries are higher than the national average and contracts are signed year-round, never laying them off during the low season. The hotel also runs cross-training courses and promotes internally whenever possible.

Among other community-building practices, all the art at Senda is made by a local women’s cooperative. Bathroom amenities are made locally too. Also, the hotel believes that educated travelers are agents of change. To support this belief, the hotel offers guests sustainability tours to explore the surrounding rainforest and beaches.

Finally, Senda works with the non-profit organization Earth Equilibrium to support the local school Escuela de Cerro Plano through their “Building for the Future” infrastructure improvement program.
Senda Monteverde’s kitchen and restaurant source its ingredients from as close to home as possible. To achieve this, the hotel works closely with local suppliers to ensure that every product is organic, that every chicken is hormone-free, and that every cow is grass-fed. This makes it possible to serve free-range eggs as breakfast and responsibly sourced fish at lunch and dinner.
To guarantee efficient energy usage, Senda puts mountain sunshine to good use through solar panels which heat water for the guest rooms. If needed, there are also energy-saving auxiliary water heaters as a backup.
Senda’s is firmly committed to the four R’s: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. As part of this pledge, it has banned single-use plastic. The hotel has also shunned plastic straws in favor of locally made bamboo stalks. They’re compostable, which helps reduce the amount of non-recyclable waste produced at the hotel.
